What I Wore ~ Maternity Edition: Casual and Cheap

It was a nice day today and all I was doing was running errands. I needed an outfit that was comfortable, casual and cool.

Nothing is actually maternity, I have had every piece except the scarf for at least 3 years, and the best part is that it was CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP!!!

I love a good scarf to add to any outfit and although I don't wear them as much as some might, I believe every pregnant woman would agree that a decent pair of leggings is a maternity must-have!

The top bun has been my go-to quick hairstyle {plus I can do it that way while it is wet} that I am sure will become my signature look when the baby gets here too!

BTW ~ I haven't done it yet, but if you grow out of your own button downs, the hubby's aren't a bad option, just slip a skinny belt around the top of your belly and now you have a tunic:)

Deviled Eggs

Wondering what to do with all those hard boiled Easter eggs? You could toss them in a Cobb salad, make egg salad sandwiches, or just eat them with a little salt on them...

Or, you could make deviled eggs!

Ingredients:
6 hard-cooked eggs, peeled and cut lengthwise
¼ cup Light Mayonnaise or Salad Dressing
½ teaspoon dry ground mustard
½ teaspoon white vinegar
1/8 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
Paprika for garnish

Directions:
Pop out the egg yolks to a small bowl and mash with a fork {make sure you mash them pretty well, otherwise the filling looks lumpy}. Add mayonnaise, mustard powder, vinegar, salt and pepper and mix thoroughly. Put the filling in a plastic bag and cut the corner to fill the the empty egg white shells with the mixture. Sprinkle lightly with paprika.

Notes:
This is a pretty standard recipe, but if you want to add something extra, you can always throw in relish or sweet pickles, or horseradish or celery...the possibilities are endless:)

Three Months of Structure

A while back I wrote about why I blog {here}, and I still feel all of that to be true, but I wanted to try something structured for the next 3 months just to see how I like it.

Here is what I am going to do...

For the next 12 weeks {notice how that coinsides with the baby's due date} I am going to try to stick to a theme-for-the-day-of-the-week. It will go something like this:

Mom Moment Monday- Anecdotes, lessons, struggles...etc. from motherhood
Tasty Tuesday- Something I am cooking, or just eating...basically just food
What I Wore Wednesday- Taking a cue from The Pleated Poppy...only mine will be the maternity edition
Threaded Thursday- Sewing projects of sorts, from clothes to home decor...whatever I am working on
Friday Fun- Whatever I think is fun that day...DIY, a story, something inspiring, perplexing, a featured friend...WHATEVER!
{Saturday and Sunday I can take off or write about something random if I want}

Since it is the first Mom Moment Monday I will share one little fun thing Emrie has started doing recently that just melts my heart every time...giving kisses!!!

"Emrie, can I have a kiss?"

She loves to give out kisses...to me, to daddy, to the baby {well the belly}, to her friends, and to Nana and Papa:)

I just can't get enough of those slobbery, sweet, Emrie kisses!!!

Here Comes Peter Cotton Tail

What is Easter without meeting the Easter Bunny. Well, judging by the picture, you tell me how well our first meeting went.

HAPPY EASTER!!!
{better luck next year}

Life Without Facebook

Tomorrow I will re-enter the world of Social Networking....AHHHHHH!

Giving up Facebook and Pinterest for the WHOLE 40 days of Lent was hard at times and then again, really not so hard at all.

Here was my experience on my journey of 'unplugging' from social media:

Day 1 and 2 - SUPER hard not to turn on the computer or phone without instinctively wanting to open either site.

Week 1 - Super easy because we were out of the country and didn't have access to any phones or computers for a week.

Week 2 - I don't even think to type in either website to my browser any longer. The problem is that I get really annoyed when I have valid reasons to need to use either website. I am annoyed when I want to message someone and I don't have their cell phone number and a Facebook message would be so easy. Or when I am doing a project and I know I pinned directions on my boards. I basically ended up Googling forever until I found the same website I had on Pinterest {does that defeat the purpose?}

Week 3 - I gave in a little with Facebook. While I was still REALLY good about not looking at anything on my page or the news feed, I had to help Phil start planning his 10 year high school reunion and I couldn't put it off any longer. Of course the only way I knew how to get in touch with anyone from his class was through Facebook. I have allowed myself to use only the messages and only for the purpose of planning the reunion. Surprisingly, I am not even tempted to look around on Facebook. I think it is because I have SO many other projects I would rather be doing!

Week 4 - With the exception of a few messages about the reunion, I was neither tempted nor wanted to get on either site.

Week 5 - It no longer even crosses my mind that I am missing Facebook or Pinterest.

Week 6 - I am almost sad that the time is coming when I can rejoin social networking sites. I have accomplished so much since not having them available that I almost don't have an interest in going back to using them. This could be a good thing though, hopefully I will stay this course and when I do use them, use them more sparingly.

Lessons learned:

My goals by unplugging were to spend the time I was wasting on social media to grow in my walk with God, be more intentional with the time I had with Emrie and finish up a few house projects.

Here is what I found happened when I 'unplugged' from Facebook and Pinterest...I STILL FOUND WAYS TO WASTE TIME!!!

If I want to waste time, or I have the time to waste, I realized I am going to do it...period!

Initially, I expected that I would take the time I used to spend on those websites to read my Bible and pray. While I did read my daily devotional {a whole 2 minutes of my time} every day for 40 days, I didn't REALLY invest much more time than I use to for my Spiritual Walk. I just shifted my time-wasting websites. Instead of Facebook, I looked at shopping websites. Instead of Pinterest, I surfed other people's blogs. Instead of either of those I started CRAFTING!!! SHAME ON ME!!!

However, it did help me to be more intentional with the time spend with Emrie because while I still wasted a lot of time on the Internet or doing crafts while she was sleeping, I found that while she was awake I hardly EVER pulled out my cell phone and NEVER picked up my computer. I think because I knew I didn't have my standard 2 mindless websites to brows on my phone, I just didn't even pick it up. This has been a WONDERFUL month with my little girl. We have done more stuff together and I have grown more patient with her. I took time to slow down and enjoy just being with her and SADLY it is because I wasn't wishing she would take a nap so I could surf the Internet to get ideas for my next project.

As for finishing projects, it was slightly annoying to get them done without Pinterest and I think I ended up defeating the purpose of not having some place to pin ideas because I just ended up saving them to my desk top. I will admit that when I was looking for project ideas, I did keep my search more narrow and wasted less time than just perusing all the stuff and coveting so much on Pinterest.

This wasn't meant to be an experiment. It was meant to be a sacrifice for Lent to remind me of the sacrifice Christ made for me.

However, there were about five overall lessons I learned from all of this:

1. Social media isn't what is keeping me from growing spiritually, my own selfishness is...my selfishness with my time and resources.
2. I didn't spend as much time on Facebook as I originally thought and it was pretty easy to give up.
3. Pinterest was a much bigger waste of my time, but if I use it correctly I do gain a lot from it {recipes, workouts, sewing tips}.
4. Social media isn't that bad if you use it the right way.
5. If I want to waste time I am going to regardless of social media...I have to be my own time manager...period.

Coloring Easter Eggs

Yes, I love doing all holiday festivities, even if Emrie is too young to really get it. So naturally, we had to color Easter eggs. Turns out, we both had a blast {even if she did put the green dye in her mouth}!

She was getting a little carried away

Pretty proud of her masterpiece!

My little artist!
I love that she kept pulling my neck to bring me closer...swoon!

Mmmm...green dye is tasty!!!
Happy Good Friday!!!!

Checking in on My 'Diaper-Pail List'

It was 4 months to D-day when I made the original 'Diaper-Pail List' and now we are at 3 months from D-day and here is how I am doing so far!

Diaper-Pale List:
1. Take Emrie to the Zoo 4 times {once each month}
We have already been 3 times in the month of March

2. Take Emrie to the Children's Museum 4 times {once each month}
We still haven't been once...the weather has been too nice

3. Make BVG2 a baby quilt
I made it, but we have changed her name since I stitched in the initials, so I need to fix that {you can see the blanket here}

4. Sew Emrie's 'Big Girl' bedding
The bedding is made and I love it!

5. Finish Emrie's 'Big Girl' room
There are four things left to do before I would consider it done: Get a rug, Hang the E's, Make the elephant wall canvases and sew a pillow for the chair.

6. Make 4 matching outfits for Emrie and BVG2 {eight total, one set each month}
I did make pants for both girls last month {Emrie likes hers, but the pattern did not account for a diaper, so I need to adjust that next time...but she looks so cute in them here}

7. Teach Emrie all the parts of the face {right now we only have eye}
She had eye and now she has nose as well

8. Go on a hike
Not even close

9. Read the Hunger Games series
Finished the first book...now on to 2 and 3

10. Plan Phil's high school reunion {this is kind of a big one}
It is in the works, we have a date and at least have an idea of what we want to do, now it is just a matter of nailing everything down.

11. Shoot at a shooting range {just because I have really wanted to}
I bought a package for Phil and I for a 1/2 hour of shooting time on Living Social...now we just need to use it!

12. Go on 4 Picnics {once each month}
Kasie and I did a picnic at the zoo...but picnics are messy with a 15 month old who wants to feed herself

13. Make all three of us girls matching headbands for the 4th of July {assuming she gets here by then}
Nope

14. Finish 2011 and start 2012 scrapbooks
I am 1/2 way through 2011...man it is taking me a long time...but at least the baby book is on track

15. Plan a really nice date night with Phil
Phil took me on a really nice date for my birthday...but that doesn't count since I didn't plan it!

16. ENJOY THE SMALL THINGS!!!
LOVING EVERY MINUTE I HAVE WITH EMRIE!!!

Only 89 days until BVG2's big arrival!!!
